The Huddle 2021 - 5G and Beyond: The Wireless World in 2030

About the event

Beyond 2030, 6G is expected to bring a new era of seamless and unrestricted connectivity between the internet and everyday life. Billions of connected humans and ‘things’ – robots, vehicles, drones and other devices – will generate zettabytes of digital information.

If harnessed in the right way, 6G has the potential to positively impact almost all areas of society – how we live, how we work and how we take care of our planet.

With early visions of 6G now emerging, WWRF’s 2023 Huddle will look at the drivers and goals that are going to be instrumental in ensuring these visions are realised, and the key challenges that are ahead in order for these to be delivered to the connected and unconnected society. It will look at the way in which 6G will start to merge the physical and the digital world and explore the ways in which existing and new technologies can come together to enable exciting new use cases and applications. By focusing on key themes such as security, sustainability, inclusivity and digital transformation, it will look at the opportunities that 6G provides in making a positive impact on businesses and communities all over the world. 

As we start out on the path towards 6G, there is a need for policymakers, connectivity providers, researchers and other key stakeholders to come together and define the roles that need to be played in order to ensure that this is also a path towards a better tomorrow. The WWRF Huddle will provide the opportunity to do this.

5G technology is transforming the way we communicate, work, and live. It enables new applications and use cases, such as autonomous vehicles, remote surgery, and smart cities. There is a growing need for talent development in 5G technology, as the demand for skilled professionals in this area continues to increase. Overall, talent development in 5G technology is crucial to ensure that we have the skilled professionals needed to leverage the potential of this transformative technology fully. As 5G technology is rapidly evolving with new standards and technologies being developed and deployed on an ongoing basis, it is imperative to ensure 5G engineers keep them abreast in tandem with the evolution of 5G and its predecessors. Capacity building in 5G Enterprise Engineers is severely lacking. This must be further developed in order for SMEs and organizations to utilize 5G within their premises. This requires investment in specialized training and education programs, as well as ongoing professional development opportunities to keep up with the rapid pace of technological change in this field.

This session will bring together key stakeholders who are involved in the early research and standards work relating to 6G to discuss the work being done and to look forward to the extent to which a common 6G global standard is a realistic objective.

  • What work is taking place around the world on research, design and development of the next generation of standards and technologies?
  • How much collaboration is being seen across different regions and standards bodies at this early stage?
  • What timelines are expected to be seen in the development of 6G standards across different standards development organisations?
  • How can early movers balance the need for collaboration in the development of 6G global standards with the goal seen across many regions to secure technological sovereignty and to reduce reliance on third-party suppliers?
  • Given current geopolitical tensions, diverging privacy and cyber security policies, sanctions and of course anything else that may occur between now and 2030, how realistic is it that a single global 6G standard will be achieved?

  • What work is being done to ensure that sustainability is at the heart of 6G network design and a key driver right from the very early stage?
  • How is this approach differing from early research into 5G, where the main focus was on productivity with sustainability very much an afterthought?
  • What impact can 6G have on delivering positive environmental and social change? To what extent can it help to feed into the UN Sustainable Development Goals, in areas such as energy consumption, use of resources, and connectivity for all?
  • What processes and tools can be utilised in order to provide transparent and accurate metrics on the impact that 6G is having in these key areas?
  • How can sustainability be built into business models for 6G and what role can different stakeholders play in building a future connectivity ecosystem that is both able to deliver on sustainability goals and profitability for businesses?

The 5G Huddle is hosted annually by the Wireless World Research Forum (WWRF). Since its inception in 2014, it has brought key 5G stakeholders together in various locations across the globe including the United Kingdom, Europe, Canada, South Africa, Japan and India, with each edition addressing the next step of the 5G ‘journey’. Discussions around ‘What is 5G?’; the development of the 5G ecosystem and infrastructure; making the 5G vision a reality; the transition from 4G to 5G; how to deliver ‘5G For All’ ; whether 5G can deliver on its promises and 5G as a catalyst for digital transformation, have all pathed the way to this year’s focus on 5G and Beyond: The wireless world in 2030.
